Named after the Taiwanese homophone for sleep, KUN, which stands for 'Know your Need', is a testament to thoughtful service and high-quality environments. The design inspiration comes from the belief that a relaxing environment is paramount in hotel design. This belief is reflected in the unique properties of KUN, where the focus is not just on the rooms but also on the in-between spaces, such as the arcade aisle for the parking lot.
The arcade aisle, a pleasant space connecting the ground floor and the first floor, is one of the hotel's unique features. Constructed with iron pipes fixed under a reinforced concrete ceiling, the arcade is installed based on varying slopes and angles. This creates a rhythm of light and shadow that guides visitors into a different space and time, setting the mood for their stay.
Inside the hotel, the design continues to impress. The oblique and staggered floor in the hall extends the vision and enriches the space, intertwining with the shadow and dividing lines of the wall to create a beautiful movement. The inclined geometric block seen upon exiting the elevator lengthens the field of vision, making people overlook the low ceiling.
The design of KUN hotel was realized over a span of three years, from 2014 to 2017. The project faced the challenge of standing out among approximately 50 hotels in a popular tourist area. Han Lu's solution was to transform the often stressful experience of finding a parking space into a beautiful memory. The result is an arcade that feels like a time tunnel, with light projections from the floor creating a unique driving experience.
The KUN hotel, with a total floor area of 5620 square meters, has been recognized for its innovative design. It was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. As Han Lu's design proves, creating a relaxing environment is indeed a crucial aspect of hotel design.
